Unstung (2008):

Run length: 1 minute, 15 seconds

Summary/Notes: In this animated parody of the final gunfight scene in the 1992 Clint Eastwood movie Unforgiven, a man must deal with a group of large noisy hornets, as well as a very talkative neighbor.

If you're a fan of the the animated "Man vs Bug" subgenre, you might also like my earlier video, Personal Bug Blaster

Unstung was a fun video to make, although it was a bit more effort than I had originally envisioned. I expected that drawing it on the computer in 2d would be a lot easier than my more typical method of using POVRray to generate 3d frames. In some ways this was indeed the case, but of course in when I'm drawing it, then I have to do the work of keeping track of which elements are in front of which other elements, redraw/reposition anything that moves, etc. as opposed to changing a few variables and letting the program handle the rest. It was was a good experience, however, and I hope to do some more 2d videos in the future.

Special thanks to:

  • The nefarius yellow jackets that chose to nest by my deck this year, thus providing inspiration for the villains. I chose to call them hornets in Unstung, as it just seemed to flow better with the dialogue. In particular, "hornet fighter" seemed like a catchier description for the protagonist than "yellow jacket fighter".

  • JPPI/Stuart of MyVidsRock.com for a conversation that took place in this thread, which helped get me thinking along the lines that eventually produced the video.
